January is Music Therapy Advocacy month which means that music therapists across the country are working extra hard to spread awareness about our profession. We advocate so passionately so that music therapy can become more widespread and the value can be seen and appreciated. This in turn leads to proper representation of the term “music therapy”, and most importantly increased access to music therapy services. Throughout the month of January, we hope to flood social media with awareness so that more people are made aware of the profession.
So how can you help? Even if you aren’t a music therapist, if you support the profession you can easily help advocate with us! I encourage you to do 1 of 3 things. By all means, feel free to do all 3 if you want!
1. Share- Social media is one of the best ways to spread awareness. It’s fast, it’s easy, it’s effective. Just by taking a few seconds to share a post from a music therapy page you follow, or sharing an article you stumble across on the web, you are opening the door for others to see what music therapy is all about! Then they tell their friends, and they tell their friends, and they tell their friends… see the domino effect?
2. Read- Check out related posts about music therapy in your state. You can easily follow the hashtag #mtadvocacy to keep up-to-date with all the action this January.
3. Educate- Now that you are learning all about the music therapy profession and the benefits it can bring to others, go tell your friends about it! Though we are a new profession, we are growing strong and part of that is because of our support from those who understand and appreciate what music therapy can do.
In closing, I’d like to thank you for your support! The smallest actions add up to big changes and gains for the music therapy field! We couldn’t do it without your help!
